Factors Affecting Students’ Political Participation (Case Study: Students at the Islamic Azad University – Sari Branch)

Political participation as a kind of participation is indicative of social and political development in a country. Students form one of the major groups in a society. Students, as a large population group in developing countries, and their political participation, are key to political stability. The purpose of this paper was to examine the impact of social capital and its respective dimensions on the students’ political participation at the Islamic Azad University. The survey research was applied to collect and analyze data. In the study, 288 students at the Islamic Azad University – Sari Branch were given questionnaires to gather data. Its face validity was confirmed and its reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha. Data were analyzed by SPSS and LISREL software packages. By dividing social capital into three variables (social trust, social networks and voluntary organizations), and incorporating five dimensions of political participation in the study, it was observed that there was statistically significant correlation between social capital dimensions and respondents’ political participation.
